After he had received the first training with the Brothers of the Common Life in Ghent and then studied in Italy especially under the famous humanist Battista Guarino in Ferrara he came to Lyon where he was active as teacher of Greek and Latin, but soon also, since 1491, as learned corrector for the workshop of the German printer Joh. Trechsel . Probably in 1500 he moved to Paris ... in order to set up a print shop himself. The printing business was soon joined by the book trade and especially the publishing business, in which we often see him associated with the great publisher Jean Petit."
