This very rare photograph shows Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) with other members of the expedition and the ship's captain with other crew members during the crossing of Lake Victoria from Fort Florence to Kampala. - The Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition, which finally crossed Africa from south to north, was led by former American President Theodore Roosevelt and financed by the Smithsonian Institution. The group was led by the legendary hunter and tracker Richard John Cuninghame. Other expedition members included Australian sharpshooter Leslie Tarlton, three American naturalists, Edgar Alexander Mearns, a retired US Army surgeon, taxidermist Edmund Heller from Stanford University and mammalogist John Alden Loring, as well as Roosevelt's 19-year-old son Kermit. The expedition led via Mombasa, British East Africa (Kenya) to the Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and along the Nile to Khartoum in Sudan. Some 11,397 animals were shot and captured for the Smithsonian Institution and the American Museum of Natural History in New York, several thousand plants were collected and an extensive ethnographic collection was compiled. - Somewhat rubbed and slightly scratched, card foxed. - With: 4 further albumen prints with photographs of inhabitants and huts of the village of Busi, Fort Florence and sailing boats on Lake Victoria as well as 2 views of Port Said.
