Heyland, Jean ChristopheCollection of 4 watercolors of flowers. 1st half 19th century. Each watercolor on J. Whatman Turkey Mill wove paper (with WZ). Sheet dimensions from 52 x 39.8 cm to 54 x 42 cm. Each signed and with the scientific name of the flower or plant in Latin. Each mounted in spots on support and under passepartout. - Margins partly somewhat irregularly trimmed. Evenly browned in mat opening. Occasionally somewhat creased at margins. Included are: - Alstromiena Chiloensis varietates - Gloxinia caracasana - Nycterium amazonicum - Lychnis Fortunü. - The Swiss engraver, watercolorist and illustrator produced plates depicting plants and especially flowers for numerous botanical publications. His most important contributions include the illustrations for Augustin Pyramus de Candolle's "Plantes Rares du Jardin de Geneve" and Boissier's "Voyage botanique...". Heyland devoted himself to detailed botanical illustrations in a clear formal language. He was so highly regarded for his work, which he carried out passionately until the end of his life, that in 1877 a newly discovered species of iris was posthumously named after Heyland: The "Iris heylandiana".
