Lex. IV/2, 855 - The Talmud edition edited by Lazarus Goldschmidt since 1896 with revised Hebraic text and German translation remained unfinished (cf. MNE II, 281). - The translation is based on the first complete printed edition by D. Bomberg, Venice 1520-23. - "The Orientalist and scholar of Judaism Lazarus Goldschmidt, actually Elieser ben Gabriel (1871-1950), "rendered outstanding services with his Talmud edition and its German translation, the first to be compiled by an individual and carried out without a subsidy" (Herlitz-K II, 1189). It cost 125 marks (a small fortune) per volume when it was published and was "completed" with the present 8 volumes. This edition was finally supplemented by further parts of the Talmud until 1936. - Mixed edition of the 1st and 2nd editions, with volume 9 published by Nijhoff in 1935 - Some spotting, a few leaves somewhat loose, some dampstaining (mainly in the inner fold area), a few leaves reinforced in the fold, 3 leaves with backed tears, several leaves with traces of staple rusting, but overall a good copy. First complete German transmission, only complete edition in German translation. - Mixed edition of the first and second editions in 8 volumes, supplemented by vol. 9, published by Nijhoff in Haag in 1935. 4°. Cont. half-leather bindings, partly somewhat rubbed, covers partly faded, vol. 9 bound in the style of the other volumes. Partly somewhat stained, a few leaves somewhat loosened, partly somewhat dampstained (mainly in the inner fold area), a few leaves reinforced in the fold, 3 leaves with backed tears, several leaves with traces of staple rusting, but overall a good copy.
