Le Noble de Tennlière, Eustache de Carta Topografica dell'Isola del Maritaggio di Monsieur Le Noble per la prima volta tradotta dal Francese in Italiano. With a folded copper map and title woodcut vignette. Cosmopoli, n.d., 1765. 40 pp. 8°. Cloth (somewhat creased and stained, spine restored). Rare Italian first edition. - Cf. Cioranesco II, 42504 (French EA of 1705). Fromm IV, 14905 (German ed. of 1736). - According to a note in a trade catalog and library holdings, there are at least three variants of editions of the same year, one with 43, the other with 44 pp. Our copy has 40 pp., a varying woodcut title vignette and no woodcut head vignette at the beginning of "avviso al publico" and the main chapter. The work is a witty satire on love and marriage, with an allegorical map of the island of marriage. It is structured like a travelogue in which the journey to marital bliss is described in detail, with the ports of call being "love", "bad advice" or "self-interest". The travelers are invited to settle down in the "province of jealousy", the "land of the deceived" or the mountains of the "in-laws". Once on the island, it is impossible to leave, although it is possible to move to the peninsulas of "Widowhood" and "Divorce" as well as to the "Island of Bigamy". The island is depicted on a large folding map. The three main islands are shown on the map, with many "natural" features, such as the various provinces, as mentioned above, "secret" and "capricious" rivers. The work appears to be an adaptation and translation of the "Carte de l'Isle de Marriage" by Eustache La Noble de Tennelière (1643-1711). - Front flyleaf with contemporary hs. Ownership inscription. Title page with old stamp. Map with small crease. Somewhat stained. Large ornate woodcut vignette on title and 1 folding engraved map. Cont. Italian stiff wrappers (spine restored, covers soiled). - Rare first Italian edition. There are at least three variant editions from the same year 1765, according to an entry in dealer's catalogue and library holdings, one with 43 the other with 44 pages. Our copy with 40 pages, a varying woodcut title-vignette as well as no woodcut head-pieces at the beginning of 'avviso al publico' and main chapter. A witty satire on love and marriage, with an allegorical map of the Island of Matrimony. The work is arranged like a travel book, describing and illustrating in detail the journey to wedded bliss, passing through the ports of 'love', 'bad advice', or 'self-interest'. The travelers are invited to make their home in the 'province of jealousy', the 'county of the cuckolds', or the mountain range of the 'in-laws'. Once on the island it becomes impossible to leave, though a transfer to the peninsulas of 'widowhood' and 'divorce' is still possible, as is a relocation to the 'island of bigamy'. The island is illustrated on an attractive large folding map, giving the title of the work enclosed in a small cartouche, one of the recurring themes of the work is also illustrated: the cuckold, the deceived husband. On the map the three main islands are illustrated, with many 'natural' features, such as the various provinces, as mentioned above, 'secret' and 'capricious' rivers. The work appears to be adapted and translated from the 'Carte de l'Isle de Marriage' by the prolific Eustache La Noble de Tennelière (1643-1711). - Somewhat stained. Map with box pleat.
