Italy was a place of longing for numerous poets and artists in the 19th century. Based on a deep yearning for the land of antiquity and Arcadia, a number of painters such as Albert Flamm traveled to deserted villages, rugged coastal landscapes and places such as the Campagna Romana. Our scene shows the coasts of Sorrento, an area south of the Gulf of Naples in south-western Italy. Flamm first traveled to Italy in 1845 together with Oswald Achenbach, at that time a region with the greatest appeal in northern Italy. In 1850, they set off on their second joint trip to Italy, this time traveling to Rome, Naples and Sicily as well as the surrounding areas. Flamm extended his journey from 1850-1853, so that our oil study was probably created during this time. The essential design element of his compositions was light, usually in warm tones created by sunshine. Landscapes became his preferred subject matter. The focus of our scene is the coastal section, characterized by vegetation marked by drought and heat. The tops of roofs and towers outline the contours of a small village not far from the Mediterranean. Flamm produced numerous studies during this creative period, all of which are united by his sensitive examination of the Italian landscape, testifying to his attachment to the country and its culture and proving his reputation as a "painter of Italy".
