Schönrock, JuliusUpper Silesian landscape. Circa 1870. Oil on canvas. 45 x 71.5 cm. Signed. With the original exhibition label of the Preußischer Kunstverein "Gemälde des preußischen Kunstverein" with handwritten work details and two further old labels, one of which also inscribed by hand, verso on stretcher. Framed in a gold-colored stucco frame with floral decoration. - Along the edges with scattered paint abrasion and small flaking as traces of framing. Varnish somewhat yellowed. Julius Schönrock studied painting at the Königsberg Academy around 1855 before transferring to the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1860, where he became a pupil of August Wilhelm Ferdinand Schirmer. He specialized in atmospheric landscapes, occasionally with staffage figures, and received recognition and fame for his paintings. Schönrock regularly exhibited at the Königsberg and Berlin academies. In the course of his devotion to landscapes, he repeatedly traveled to Silesia and enthusiastically devoted himself to nature. The present work reveals a confidently executed brushstroke, an adept eye for composition and a skillful use of light. Oil on canvas. Signed. Fine craquelure in places due to age. Overall very good. Atmospheric scene of a village in summer tranquillity. - Prussian painter, who mostly lived and worked in Berlin. In his late working period he traveled to Silesia, mostly to depict the rural landscapes which he was most dinstinguished and known for.
