Atmospheric landscape of ruins with romantic echoes in an atmospheric night. The painting depicts the ruins of Kropfsberg Castle, in present-day Tyrol, Austria. At the time the painting was created, Tyrol belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria and the German landscape and veduta painter Anton Doll turned his attention from the city of Munich to the scenic surroundings of the royal seat. Based in Munich, the painter made frequent excursions into the Bavarian (Alpine foothills) landscape and depicted the scenery, preferably in winter and snow and in the evening or at night. Both components can be found in our scene, so that our painting shows a typical personal scene that presumably dates from his late work. Our scene has echoes of Dutch landscape painting of the 17th and 19th centuries and features a staggered spatial backdrop and a balanced composition. Doll, who is regarded as the most important representative of the Munich School, had a great fascination for the Bavarian landscape and the rural life of its inhabitants. Oil on wood panel.
