Bolognese school, XVII century. Circle of Simone Cantarini "Il Pesarese" (Pesaro, 1612-Verona, 1648) Pietà. Oil on canvas. From the compositional point of view the work is reminiscent of the one made by Simone Cantarini in 1640 and preserved in the Museum of San Lorenzo del Escorial, which in turn is based on the engraving executed by the Flemish Joost de Pape of the Pietà Farnese by Anibale Carracci. The choice of an essential chromatic palette reduced to some ranges of browns, enlivened by skilful touches of white of the veil and the dull red of the tunic as well as the dematerialization of the contours, bordering on the unfinished, the transparency of the flesh tones, the abbreviated interpretation of the garments and the simplicity of the structure that we see in this painting makes us think of a painter close to Cantarini, as they are characteristics of his late production, of a short life cut short at the age of 36.
