Francisco de Paula Van Halen y Gil (Vic, Barcelona, 1814-Madrid, 1887)
The rescue of captives in the time of Carlos III.
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1835. Based on the work of José Aparicio made in 1813 and preserved in the Prado Museum. It represents an event that had happened fifty years earlier, when Charles III ordered the rescue of a large number of captives in Algiers, in 1768.Francisco de Paula Van Halen, began his pictorial training in Barcelona and moved early to Madrid to the Academy of San Fernando, where he studied under the tutelage of José Aparicio. The historical theme will mark and define most of his pictorial production, which he regularly presents at official exhibitions organized by leading Spanish art institutions. He collaborated as a draftsman and engraver in the main illustrated art magazines that proliferated in Madrid in the first half of the 19th century, which made known the sights and monuments of practically the entire Spanish geography, with a special review of the military events that occurred in these places. In 1851 he was named honorary chamber painter of Queen Isabella II and supernumerary academician of the Academy of San Fernando.
