A carved figure of Saint Sebastian, ca. 1640 probably Upper Swabia decorated with colored paint. The fine and expressive sculpture shows the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, tied to a bare tree trunk and clothed only with a loincloth.
Footnote: Sebastian (Latin: Sebastianus; c. AD 255 – c. AD 288) was an early Christian saint and martyr. According to traditional belief, he was killed during the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians.
Provenance: prpivate collection in Pennsylvania.
Dimensions: H: 38 in., (96.5 cm.)
Some chips and paint loss. Considering the age and medium the carving is in fine condition with expected signs of age and wear.
