A NICOLO INTAGLIO WITH THE PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG...

Estimate :
500 - 700 EUR

A NICOLO INTAGLIO WITH THE PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN, 4TH CENTURY AD Nicolo intaglio with the bust of a clean shaven young man facing left. This type of nicolo with the portrait of a young man is common enough to attempt to explain the type and its significance with more than a simple description. The portraits resemble those of the later members of the family of Constantine as is often represented on their coins. These include Constantius II, Constantius Gallus and ending with Julian II or otherwise known as the Apostate. One can speculate that given the shifting loyalties of the period it might have been circumspect to where rings of loyalty which might be termed 'generic'. They are common enough to merit some elucidation. Nicolo banded agate. 13.5 by 12 mm. Small chip at the left hand side. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
