Estimate :
300 - 500 EUR

A LATE ROMAN GARNET INTAGLIO, 4TH CENTURY AD A garnet intaglio showing the portrait of a young man facing left. The stone is a well formed cabouchon garnet carefully scalloped out at the back to make a convex surface in order to give a lighter colour to the stone when viewed. Such stones are thought to have been made in Constantinople and the popularity of these generic portraits may reflect that by this time with a lowering of the skill base for glyptic art such representations would have been accepted as portraiture. One intriguing idea is that they represent the young Christ as he was usually shown at the time as an adolescent. 13.5 by 10 mm.
