A CARNELIAN SCARABOID WITH AN ENGRAVED HIPPOCAMP, 4TH CENTURY BC OR LATER A carnelian scaraboid showing a Hippocamp to the right. A common subject from Hellenistic times onwards, such a device would be used as a personal seal, possibly meaning that the owner had some connection to the sea. The style suggests a later period for the engraving as there is some wheel cutting, so we might be looking at a earlier plain scaraboid being worked in Roman times, not an uncommon occurrence. 4th century BC, engraving possibly 1st century AD. Carnelian with inclusions. 17 by 14 mm.
