SCIENCE - GAY-LUSSAC Louis-Joseph (1778 - 1850) - Autograph letter signed
Autograph letter signed by the French chemist and physicist. He is known mostly for his discovery with von Humboldt that water is made of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen by volume and for his work on alcohol–water mixtures, which led to the degrees Gay-Lussac used to measure alcoholic beverages in many countries. Addressed to the painter Claude-François Mirault (1784-1862), presidennt of the Athénée des Arts: “…N’ayant point eu l’honneur de vous voir hier à l’académie où je suis resté jusqu’à 4 h.
