He worked on statistics, complex analysis, partial differential equations, the calculus of variations, analytical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, elasticity, and fluid mechanics. He also predicted the Arago spot in his attempt to disprove the wave theory of Augustin-Jean Fresnel. Addressed to François Alexandre Frédéric de La Rochefoucauld (1747 - 1827), concerning his upcoming movements and: “…je lirai le manuscrit la semaine prochaine, et j’ai fait prévenir un ancien élève de l’école polytechnique…”. 1 p. ½.
