STAËL (Germaine Necker, Madame de). De l'Influence...

Estimate :
150 - 200 EUR

STAËL (Germaine Necker, Madame de). De l'Influence des passions sur le bonheur des individus et des nations. ÀLausanne en Suisse, chez Jean Mourer, Hignou et compe, 1796. In-8, 376-(2) pp. in olive-glazed shagreened calf, smooth spine cloisonné and fleuronné with garnet-red title-piece, frieze of gilt palmettes framing the boards, gilt wavy fillet on the edges, inner gilt roulette, marbled edges; binding sunned with boards a little deglazed, marginal wetness, a few leaves with marginal pencil marks (period binding). First edition. Cultivating her "concern for style" to the extreme, Madame de Staël had the volume corrected twice, printed in September 1796 with an errata leaf, and amended shortly afterwards with 6 printed cartons. This edition is thus composed of copies before and after cartons. They replace ff. B6, C8, D7, F6, I7 and T6, thus making corrections to pp. 27, 47, 61, 62, 91, 92, 141, 142, 300 (Lonchamp, no. 29). Meditated on since at least 1793, this moral and political study approaches the problem of individual and collective happiness from the angle of the passions: it locates the source of individual felicity in the progress of the mind and acts of benevolence, and presents the moderate Republic as the appropriate framework for collective happiness. Provenance: Counts of Antioch (armorial bookplate vignette).
