Asian art and objects - China - A rare and large Chinese porcelain plate decorated in underglaze blue with a central scene of Bacchus holding a goblet and standing in an interior with a table, tiled floor and a pane window, all encircled by swirling grapevines, molded and gadrooned rim. This plate is almost certainly made after an unidentified engraving and for the Dutch market. Literature: an identical plate in the Hodroff Collection, see David S. Howard, 'The Choice of the Private Trader', page 40, entry 5 and Ron Fuchs, 'Made in China', page 127, entry 78. Both books suggest the possibility of this being a tray for carry goblets, however, as the center of the plate is not level but shallow in the central section of Bacchus, this theory seems highly unlikely. China, Kangxi period (1662-1722) -D. 37,5 cm, old restoration, chip-
