JAPAN, UMETADA SCHOOL - EDO Period (1603 - 1868) Iron Kakumaru gata chased in hira bori and inlaid with gold and silver of a map of Japan on one side and Shinto symbol (gohei) on the other. Unsigned. H. 7.8 cm The map shown details the provinces of the time, which today correspond to the islands of Kyûshu, Shikoku and Honshû and a few nearby islands, with their names in gold plating. The island of Hokkaidô was not yet a province of Japan at the time, and is therefore not included. Featured in the exhibition Samurai. Guerriers et esthètes, Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire, Strasbourg, from March 11 to July 13, 2022, and is reproduced in the exhibition catalog, n°060, p.101.
