Le couvercle est gravé du compas-équerre, du double triangle, du "G" et de l'inscription "James Thornber, Esquire, in grateful acknowlegment of his disinterested kindness and attention to the interests of the family of his friend & Brother the late Joseph Simpson". Intérieur en vermeil. Dans son écrin d'origine en maroquin rouge recouvert intérieurement de velours. Poinçons de Birmingham 1842 et de l'orfèvre Nathaniel Mills. Nathaniel Mills & Sons (1746-1840) orfèvre anglais de réputation internationale pour ses boites en argent. Ses fils William and Thomas lui succédèrent.
