H. 20 - D. 17 cm NEROFUMO VASE Smoked terracotta, brass cover Nerofumo is a ceramic vase with a black surface achieved through the Bucchero reduction firing method. Originally used it by pre-Roman Etruscan population, this unique technique requires a reduced supply of oxygen in the kiln firing. In the smoke-filled atmosphere of the kiln due to the combustion of wood, the oxygen-starved flames drew oxygen molecules from the iron oxide of the pottery. During this process, the clay changes color from its natural red to black. The piece consist of a black ceramic and a cover which can sway inside the cavity of the vase. The swinging movement gives an “hypnotic effect” to the object which reminds of a totem suspended in time. As a guardian of secrets, the cover can be placed on top of ceramic vase to close it, thus creating an intimate relation with the user.
