A HUMOROUS IVORY NETSUKE OF A SEATED TIGER WITH... Lot n° 12

Ivory netsuke Japan early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The ivory is stained and bears a good colour and patina. The tiger is looking backwards, its shoulders well pronounced, and the movement of the body well captured. Its long tail is curling up its backside, the hairwork is finely incised and the tiger’s characteristic fur coat pattern is expressed. It has a very humorous expression; its tongue is sticking out and the eyes are wide open. The strong and resilient tiger has become a somewhat tame and laughable creature. Himotoshi on the underside.
