Ivory netsuke
Japan
mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
The puppy dog is chubby, almost spherical, and has a very humorous look on its face. Around its neck is a thick collar tied up in the back, to which a small bell is attached, also spherical but tiny compared to the puppy. The dog appears well-behaved, is entirely smooth and almost white, giving it the expression of a near-supernatural creature. Deep irregular himotoshi on the underside. The beautiful well-chosen unstained ivory bears some resemblance to the works of Kaigyokusai Masatsugu.
