Saint Mathias in walnut, carved in the round with remains of polychromy and gilding. The saintly apostle is standing, holding an open book in his right hand and leaning on the handle of an axe with the other; face with emaciated features framed by strongly wavy hair; he is dressed in a tunic and a cloak that returns to the front, completely hiding his left hand; molded reliquary base with downturned corners. Rhône Valley, circa 1400 H. 62.5 cm (very slight accidents) While evangelizing in Judea, St. Matthias was stoned and beheaded with an axe in front of the Temple in Jerusalem. The instrument of his martyrdom made him the patron saint of carpenters, tailors and butchers.
