“Saint Michael Archangel”. Carved, polychromed and gilded wooden sculpture with “estofado” technique. Colonial School. Probably from Peru or Mexico. 17th century. The refined Spanish sgraffito and estofado techniques reach their maximum splendour in this sculpture, as we can see in the marvellous ornamentation of the beautiful armour, in blue, red and gilt tones. The overcoat is polychromed and decorated with bouquets of flowers that have been painted on with a brush. The saint wears a red cloak with a gilt trim which, like the rest of the clothes, is magnificently carved, creating a feeling of movement and bringing great liveliness to the composition. Saint Michael stands triumphantly upon a twisted and tormented devil. 155 x 80 X 65 cm.
