Saint Francis is immersed in Christ's suffering. He has tears in his reddened eyes and holds a skull in his hands, a symbol of the transience of earthly life. To his right is a crucifix, to his left is an open book. In the book you can decipher the title, it reads: "The Monastery", an allusion to the older branch of the Minorite order, who were also called Conventuals.
