An extremely subtle sculpted Japanese ivory jewellery box, signed Tohekido Yoshikazu, Meiji period, H 13 - 20 x 14,3 cm - 1187 g (+)
The cover is intricately carved in openwork relief with numerous quail amongst berry thickets; the border with meandering motive and the sides and base with a pattern simulating straw wickerwork. The corners of the box are supported by quail and wheat feet, the interior decorated in gold-speckled black lacquer. Signed on a mother-of-pearl plaque on the cover Tohekido Yoshikazu.
