Figure study of a standing woman, seen from behind, by Jan Horemans the Elder of Antwerp. The red chalk drawing is from the famed Smet collection and has the SMET A.F.C. stamp on the verso. A number of similar drawings by Horemans from the Smet Collection were sold by Christie's in London in November 2000. Jan Josef Horemans the Elder (1682-1759) was a Flemish painter of the 18th century. Born in Antwerp, he is known for portraits, genre works, and historical allegories. He produced a large number of small anecdotal pictures that were executed in the tradition of 17th-century Flemish genre painters. Dimensions: 7 5/8 x 3 3/4 in., (18.5 x 9.5 cm.) Condition: The drawing is perfect. A large crease along the top right corner. The bottom corners are folded. The paper is aged with signs of foxing and smudges. The image is marked on verso.
