African Elephon mask, also called an Epa mask, of the Yoruba people from Nigeria, made of carved wood coated with a layer of clay and pigments, the height of the mask itself: is 43 cm, height including the dedicated stand: is 58 cm width: 26 cm.
(* Masks of this type used to be used in ceremonies in honor of the ancestors, danced with them mainly during periods of drought, accompanied by music and countless costumed dancers.
The Epa mask comes in all shapes and sizes. Most will have a large superstructure on top, but others will only feature Orangon, the first defiant Yoruba king, like this piece here.
Apa festivals last for several days during which sacred ceremonies are held in honor of ancestors. The mask can also be worn during funerals and rites of passage.
