A BANDED AGATE INTAGLIO OF A GRYLLOS, 1ST CENTURY...

Estimation :
1 500 - 2 000 EUR

A BANDED AGATE INTAGLIO OF A GRYLLOS, 1ST CENTURY BC-AD A well executed gryllos showing a cockerel which has been shown with a head of a woman wearing a modius, the body represented by a bearded satyr and the wing has been transformed into a ram's head with a long twisted horn. As a final embellishment a cornucopia is carried by the beast. The term gryllos, used for these bizarre combinations, is derived from the Greek word for caricature. They were popular in the early Empire and probably were part of popular culture of which the survival of intaglios are the best evidence. 14 by 10 mm. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
