A ROMAN INTAGLIO OF SERAPIS WITH EAGLE, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD An opaque carnelian intaglio showing a bust of Serapis to the left surmounting an eagle with spread wings. A popular type supposedly with soldiers, the combination of Serapis and the eagle, symbol of Rome's power and Jupiter. This type was popular with soldiers and the chances are that the owner of this seal, once mounted in a ring, would have been in the military. Opaque orange coloured carnelian 13.5 by 11 mm. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
