A FRAGMENTARY CAMEO OF EROS WITH A TORCH, 2ND-3RD CENTURY AD A fragment of a cameo carved from banded agate showing Eros in mourning leaning on a downturned torch. The missing part of this cameo might have had another Eros in a similar pose given that there seems to be a representation of a cave or an apse above his head. The back has been left chipped as is the case with cameos of this period. The subject is usually associated with mourning or loss. Banded agate. 16 by 9 mm. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
