A ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO OF JUPITER FLANKED...

Estimation :
800 - 1 000 EUR

A ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO OF JUPITER FLANKED BY FORTUNA AND VICTORIA, 2ND-3RD CENTURY AD A charming carnelian intaglio showing Jupiter seated on this throne facing right, receiving a wreath from Victory who also holds a palm frond. Behind him stands Fortuna with her rudder and cornucopia. Despite being entirely wheel cut the seal shows a great sense of composition and precise execution of the figures. The reddish carnelian shows some black inclusions which are indicative of the possible Balkan origin of this piece. The victory accorded to Jupiter here probably has a military connotation as many soldiers revered the cult of the Emperor and the tutelage of Jupiter in the imperial cult. The stone has been cut to a lentoid shape as opposed to the normal flat surface used for both sides. 15 by 11 mm. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
