A CARNELIAN INTAGLIO SHOWING JUPITER SEATED WITH VICTORY, 2ND-3RD CENTURY AD A carnelian intaglio of Jupiter seated right on his throne holding a patera (?) in his left hand and a scepter with his right. A crudely cut gouge in front of his feet must represent the eagle usually seen. To the left stands Victory holding a palm frond and raising a laurel wreath to the God. While this intaglio is crudely rendered with the wheel cut technique it has a certain charm of such items quickly produced for a mass market. The dark inclusions seen in the stone are often indicative of intaglios found in the Balkans. 15 by 11 mm. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
