"The Virgin of the Apocalypse with child". Carved linden wood 360º sculpture, polychrome, gilt and silvered. Originates from an altarpiece. Ulm, Swabia. Germany. Gothic. Late 15th century. Mary is depicted as standing in a frontal position, swinging slightly, with her right foot on a quarter of the moon. She is holding the Christ child, who appears to be uneasy, with her left hand, while she holds out some fruit to Him with her right hand. The faces are magnificently worked. The head is topped with a large crown from which long and richly sculpted locks of hair tumble to her waist. Outstanding mastery in the sculpting of the long, deep folds of the cloak, creating a great sensation of volume and movement. A magnificent example of imagery from the end of the German Gothic period, undoubtedly by a great sculptor. Swabia, in the south of Germany, had two of the most important artistic centres dedicated to imagery in Ulm and Augsburg. Height: 112 cm
