A BEAUTIFUL GREEK GREY MARBLE STATUE OF SLEEPING ARIADNE 2nd century BC 113 cm (44,48 in) length The daughter of Minos depicted reclining while is sleeping, her right bent arm wearing bracelet positioned across her torso twisted to the left, resting her head on her partially now missing right hand, a mantle cascading over her back and draped around her waist leaving the upper torso exposed, with broad U-shaped folds accentuating the form of her legs, the hair carefully incised and arranged into an elaborate coiffure, composed of a centerparted tier arching across the forehead and pulled back over the top in a multiple overlapping tiers bound in a chignon; the delicately-modelled brows arching gracefully and merging with the bridge of her partially now missing nose with closed almond- shaped eyes, the lower part of the ear hollowed for inlay, the small mouth dimpled at the corners, with full lips elegantly opened in the act of breathing, the chin rounded. The iconographic style of the statue suggest a late Hellenistic production, probably from Alexandria PROVENANCE: Ex Ghassan T. Rihani Collection. Amman, Jordan.
