A CARDIOPHYLAX D. max. 22.3 cm. Thick bronze sheet, raised, chased and incised. Villanova, Central Italy (?), 8th-1st half 7th cent. B.C. Highly ornate, slightly convex cardiophylax (heart protector). At the centre are five nubs forming a cross with fine grooves and friezes of nubs and notches arranged concentrically around them; ornamental band of zigzag hatching and left-spinning swastikas. Two fixation holes near the edge. Reverse in the negative. Closed fissures at the edge; one large fragment restored; reverse stabilized in places. Provenance: Formerly Estate of Wladimir Rosenbaum (1894-1984), before 1984. As the name implies, cardiophylakes served to protect the chest (esp. the heart) in battle. Kräftiges Bronzeblech, Treib-, Ziselierarbeit, Einzeichnung. Villanova, Mittelitalien (?), 8.-1. Hälfte 7. Jh.v.C. Reich verzierte, leicht konvexe Brustplatte. Konzentrisch um fünffaches Noppenkreuz angeordneter Dekor: feine Rillen, Noppen-, Kerbenfriese; Ornamentband mit schraffierter Binnengravur in Form von Zickzack und links drehenden Swastika. In Randnähe zwei Fixationslöcher. Rückseite im Negativ. Geschlossene Risse am Rand; ein grösseres Fragment ergänzt; Rückseite partiell verstärkt. Provenienz: Ehem. Nachlass Wladimir Rosenbaum (1894-1984), vor 1984. Kardiophylakes dienten, wie der Name verdeutlicht, dem Schutz des Brustbereichs (des Herzens) im Kampf.
