A PORTRAIT BUST OF A LADY H. 60 cm. Marble. Roman, 1st half 2nd cent. A.D. Elegant bust of a woman of mature years, looking towards her proper right, draped in a loose tunic over her shoulders. Her long strands of hair are wound up into an elaborate onkos with tight curls. The diadem-like structure framing the face and the coils of braided hair on the crown of the head reflect a fashion established for various members of the imperial family such as the Empress Vibia Sabina, wife of Hadrian, and her sister, Matidia the Younger. Historical repairs, in the manner of the Roman workshop of Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (1716-1799), to the nose, parts of the hair, right bosom, shoulder and front. Surfaces worn, with some pitting. Mounted on an 18th-century socle. Provenance: Formerly private coll., Paris, ca. 1950. For a bust of Plotina, wife of Trajan, with similar hairstyle, cf. Cat. Louvre - 1996, no. 32. BÜSTE EINER VORNEHMEN RÖMISCHEN DAME H. 60 cm. Marmor. Römisch, 1. Hälfte 2. Jh.n.C. Elegante, leicht nach rechts blickende Dame mit einer lose gebundenen Tunika über den Schultern. Ihr Haar ist zum elaboraten Onkos hochgesteckt und mit Schläfenlocken gerahmt. Der diademartige Haaraufbau oberhalb der Stirn und die geflochtenen Haare auf der Kalotte wiederspiegeln eine Mode, die von verschiedenen Mitgliedern der kaiserlichen Familie, etwa der Kaiserin Vibia Sabina, der Gemahlin Hadrians, und ihrer Schwester, Matidia der Jüngeren, begründet wurde. Historische Reparaturen mit sorgfältigen Marmorergänzungen an den Haaren und Nase, der rechten Brust, Schulter und Stirn, sehr im Stil der römischen Werkstatt von Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (1716-1799).
