Amsterdam, Zacharie Châtelain, 1732-39, 7 vols, folio, cont. mottled calf (sl. rubbed, some minor staining), elaborate gilt orn. spines on 7 raised bands (sl. rubbed joints), red & brown leather title label, complete (some minor spotting & foxing). Very good copy. Cfr. ill.
Rare edition - the most complete - of this monumental atlas by H.A. Châtelain (1648-1743), published in 7 vols. This copy was published by Zacharie Châtelain: Pt I is the final 3rd ed. (1739), the other vols are the 2nd ed. published in 1737 (Pt II-III), 1735 (Pt IV) and 1732 (for Pt V-VI-VII).
First published in Amsterdam from 1705 to 1720, the various vols were updated at various times up to 1739 when the 4th ed. of vol. I appeared, stated as the “dernière edition, corrigée & augmentée”.
The 1st 4 vols seem to have undergone 4 printings with the later printings being the most desirable as they contain the maximum number of corrections and additions. The remaining 3 final vols were 1st issued between 1719-1720 and revised in 1732. Pt I to IV contains information concerning old (Greece, Rome) and modern Europe (incl. Russia and Turkey), pt V concerning Asia, pt VI about
Africa and America and pt VII is a suppl. The text, divided into dissertations, is written by N.
Gueudeville (1652-1721), a defrocked Benedictine monk, who became a journalist, a pamphleteer and a writer. Engr. ills: 7 allegorical titles by R. de Hooghe, J. Goeree & R. Picart, 7 title-vign. by R.
