[Book of Hours] - Horae. [Flanders?, 2nd half 15th c.]. Latin manuscript on vellum, c. 16,8 x 11,3 cm, old limp vellum (a recasing with mod. paper flyleaves), flat spine, [116] ff.: calendar 12 ff. + 13 quaterniones (some decorative borders cut short, traces of use: soiling in bottom margin, some minor thumbing), 23 ll., written in black/brown ink in a very readable gothic hand; kept in a cloth box. In very good condition. Cfr. ill.
Nice Book of Hours, with numerous decorated and illuminated initials.
Contents: Calendar (with i.a. in red: Amandus, Bonifacius, Eligius, Bavo & Remigius), Hours of the Holy Cross and of the Holy Spirit, Mass of the Holy Virgin, Prayers to the Holy Virgin and to various Saints, Hours of the Virgin, 7 Pentitential Psalms, Office of the Dead.
Decoration: rubricated throughout; numerous 1- or 2-line initials in red, blue or gold; 1 5-line initial in blue, red and gold; six 7-line initials in blue with red penwork and gold background (text with 3 ruled borders, marginal decoration with coloured leaves); 27 small miniatures with
Saints and Nativity Cycle, c. 4 x 3,5 cm: St John the Evangelist (on Patmos), Pietà, Gregory's Mass,
Michael, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, Peter & Paul, Nicholas, Anthony, Christopher,
Sebastian, Adrian, Erasmus, Mary Magdalen, Margaret, Catherine, Barbara, Apollonia, Genoveva,
Visitation, Nativity, Shepherds, Magi, Presentation in the Temple, Massacre of the Innocents, Flight to Egypt, Child Jesus as Salvator Mundi.
Provenance: on 3 old vellum flylvs, bound with at front, some records of a Liège noble family, 16th- 17th c., i.a. “Marie de argenteau”, “Nostre filz ernest est ne a Sclessin le 21de maye l'anné 1607”.
