AN AMUSING IVORY NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT TIGER Lot n° 11

Ivory netsuke Japan, Kyoto 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A compact depiction of a recumbent tiger, or tora, its head slightly raised and its tail attached to its back. The tiger is the third animal of the zodiac; the tiger and dragon are considered the most powerful animalistic forces in the universe. Tigers also served on amulets for a safe return, as it was said that a tiger could travel for a thousand miles and still safely return home. This tiger’s expression is more tame than powerful and very amusing. It is crafted in the Kyoto style, with eyes inlaid with horn, a finely carved tiger fur pattern, its long tail curling up its back, legs closely together and the himotoshi on the underside. WIDTH 4.3 CM Condition: Several age cracks; worn patina especially on the underside. Good condition. Provenance: French private collection
