Ivory netsuke
Japan
c. 18th to 1st half of 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
A small, compact and very densely crafted netsuke of a yagi (goat), which could also be literally translated as “mountain sheep”. Finely carved head with black inlaid eyes, dense fur and striking leg pose. Its head is raised and turned back, its horns touching the body, the deep fur pattern is blackened. Himotoshi on the underside; the goat’s male gender is hinted at as well.
