Ivory netsuke
Japan
19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
A very lively and precisely crafted work showing a dog presumably of the race imported from Europe, which was called kame, supposedly originating from the English “come here”. Both paws are placed on a smooth ball between its thighs. The fur coat is carefully incised and inked, except for several smooth and untreated areas which represent the spots. Snub nose almost appearing like a fish, black inlaid eyes, floppy ears and a large, knotted collar. Well hollowed himotoshi through the thigh and behind.
HEIGHT 3.8 CM
Condition: Good, worn condition. One large age crack through the ball and several smaller ones.
Provenance: British private collection
