Lacquered wood netsuke Japan 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Futen, or Fujin, the god of the wind, appears like an oni (demon) in this work, with small horns on his head, a red body and claws. Seated on a circular cloud with a bag of winds beside him, he is holding a spatula in one hand, which he uses to dig a hole in the cloud to see what is happening on earth below. Lacquer netsuke are quite rare and were made by lacquer masters. They are usually slightly lighter in weight. Himotoshi in the cloud on the underside. HEIGHT 3 CM, DIAMETER 3.7 CM Condition: Good condition, minor wear to the lacquer Provenance: English private collection
